GV Community: Important Announcement Regarding School Restructuring for 2024-2025 Dear Grand Valley Students, Parents, Staff, and Community, It is with careful consideration and a commitment to adaptability that I address you today. Over the past few years, our school has experienced a decline in enrollment, prompting us to evaluate our structure to ensure the best educational experience for our students while maintaining financial stability. Since 2008, our enrollment has decreased from over 1,400 students to approximately 850 in 2024. To align with this modern reality, we have undergone significant staffing adjustments, reducing our workforce from over 150 employees to fewer than 100. Despite these changes, I am pleased to report that our school system remains financially stable, thanks to diligent stewardship and prudent planning. Our facilities continue to be maintained to high standards, ensuring a conducive environment for learning and community use. Today, I am announcing some administrative restructuring measures that will come into effect for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. These changes are designed to optimize our resources and better serve our students in the current educational landscape. Firstly, we will transition to a K-5 Elementary School and a 6-12 Middle School/High School model. Under this new structure, fifth-grade students will remain in the elementary building for one more year before transitioning to the middle school/high school campus. To oversee these distinct educational phases, we are appointing two main principals for the next academic year. Mrs. Kerington Wayslaw will serve as our Elementary Principal, while Mr. John Glavickas will take on the role of Middle School/High School Principal. Additionally, Dr. Ellen Winer will transition from Director of Pupil Services to Special Education Director, assuming a reduced schedule. Ms. Roberta Cozad will move from her role as High School Principal to Assistant Superintendent, Director of Special Programs, focusing on critical areas such as grants, safety programs, district strategic academic planning, and curriculum alignment to enhance student academic progress. To ensure a smooth transition, parents/guardians of fourth-grade students will soon receive communication from the Elementary School informing them that their child will remain in the Elementary School for fifth grade. We believe that this additional year in the elementary setting will contribute to their academic success. Change is inevitable, and as educational leaders, we must adapt to evolving circumstances to provide the best opportunities for our students. I appreciate your patience, understanding, and support as we navigate these changes together. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our students’ success and for being valued members of the Grand Valley community. Sincerely, Dr. William R. Nye Jr. Superintendent
