Grand Valley High School Students Excel at Solo/Ensemble Competition
Grand Valley music students participated in the OMEA District 5 Solo/Ensemble Contest held at Warren G Harding High School on January 22, 2022. Students performed solos and ensembles and were judged on a scale of I (Superior), II (Excellent), III (Good), IV (Fair), or V (Poor).
With a total of 6 events, the Grand Valley contingent came away with all Superior ratings. “I am very proud of these students,” stated band director Tim Carlson, “They were all well prepared and performed with confidence. It is very rare for all events from a school to earn all Superior ratings and while Grand Valley has done well in the past, I cannot remember this happening for us before.”
Grand Valley’s events were:
Sydney McDonald – Flute Solo
Ben Portzer – Xylophone Solo
Emily Carlson – Trombone Solo
Emily Carlson – Soprano Solo
Clarinet Trio of Alex Portman, Jennifer Baldwin, and Kairi Smith
Trombone Trio of Emily Carlson, Jason Byers, and Andy Pirnat

Front (L to R): Sydney McDonald and Emily Carlson
Back (L to R): Kairi Smith, Jenifer Baldwin, Alex Portman, Jason Byers, and Ben Portzer

5th Annual Children’s Cancer Research Fundraiser
Hi Grand Valley Elementary! Every year for the past 5 years we have done a fundraiser to support research for Childhood Cancer. Our fundraiser is a week full of fun dress up days where you have to donate 25 cents to dress up each day. All proceeds go to the Children’s Cancer Research Fund. It started as a fundraiser in honor of Nurse E, who was diagnosed with Cancer a few years ago and has survived the fight! This year, as we are still honoring Nurse E, we are honoring Autumn Vanek, a senior at Grand Valley High School, who has been diagnosed with cancer recently. Our goal for 2022 is $5,000, if we hit our goal Dr. Morse has agreed to get blue streaks in her hair! Also, our Middle School principal, Dr. H, has agreed to shave his hair if we reach our goal. To hit our goal we will need YOUR help! Our fundraiser is January 24, 25,26,27,28, and 31. The dress up days are the following.
Monday, January 24-Career Day: Dress up as what you want to be when you grow up.
Tuesday, January 25-Timemachine Day: Dress up like you are in the past, present, or future.
Wednesday, January 26 (G.R.I.T.T. Day)-Weekend Day: Dress like you would on the weekend (Pjs or comfortable clothes).
Thursday, January 27-Theater Thursday: Dress like your favorite actor/actress or movie character.
Friday, January 28-Gold or Yellow and Hat Day: Wear yellow or gold to support Childhood Cancer and you can wear a hat.
Monday, January 31-Mellow Monday: Pj Day!
We hope you will participate in our fundraiser!
